Rörelser (Movements) by Sixten Sandra Österberg shown at SKF/Konstnärshuhset in Stockholm 2021.

In Rörelser the viewer is introduced to contemporary portraits and landscapes painted in a classic tradition. Body shapes and facial features are meticulously built up only to be demolished, thereby creating space for other, unexpected expressions. The paintings are poised between the individuality of a portrait, and shared collective experience. The deconstructive process contains a psychological aspect of intimate recognition and distant anonymity that goes deep below the surface.

The intense materiality of the painting creates a sense of the individual appearance as being under constant negotiation, both in the picture plane and in the space of the room. The title of the exhibition refers to these different, yet interconnecting movements. The combination of richness of detail and explosive outbursts creates a complex picture. Realism and expressionism that together form an enigmatic world for the viewer to dive into and decipher.
Sixten Sandra lingers on the perceptive body and how it activates contemporary political and social conventions through the image. By contrasting the viewer’s internalized ideas about the corporeal with the artworks’ representations of the body, the artist creates a vibrating tension that questions the cultural norms we are all immersed in.
