Following a period of witchcraft investigations, more than one hundred innocent people—almost all of them women—were executed and burned at the stake. Three and a half centuries later, this contemporary art festival brings together around thirty artists under the artistic direction of Karolina Aastrup and Helena Byström. Working within local, national, and international contexts, they respond to this history and its wider implications in diverse ways. The exhibitions are spread across nine locations: Apotekshuset Sollefteå, Brynge kulturområde, Kramfors konsthall, Herrgårdsparken sculpture park, Härnösands konsthall, Sundsvalls museum, Timrå library, Västernorrlands museum and Örnsköldsviks museum The title The Great Noise (Det stora oväsendet) evokes the local and historical resonance of the witch trials while pointing to the broader social forces and power structures that made such atrocities possible. These dynamics are neither confined to the past nor unique to Sweden: even today, polarised societies driven by inequality, Othering, misogyny, and rapid technological change continue to foster persecution and oppression. Kiruna but spent most of her life in Sollefteå in the north of Sweden. Her life and artistic practice were deeply influenced by the pressing issues of her time: emerging computer technology, environmental destruction, nuclear power, the peace movement, and women’s liberation. In light of the escalating climate crisis and the digital revolution of the present day, Atti's art is more relevant than ever.&nbsp; Between 1954 and 1958, she divided her time between family life in Sollefteå and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, where she studied Fine Art. Inspired by the rock carvings in Nämforsen, Atti later travelled to France to study cave paintings, in search of a primal form of image-making. “Atti Johansson &nbsp;- Mekanisk/Organisk” (“Mechanical/Organic”) presents 35 years of Atti's artistic practice, focusing on the questions that she was most passionate about: technology, the forest, and the vulnerability of human bodies. The exhibition takes its name from a series of assemblages called “Mekanisk/Organisk”, which served as the foundation for several public works, including a ten-metre-long wall installation titled “Vårt medvetande ligger långt efter teknikens framsteg” (Our Consciousness Is Far Behind Technological Progress). After almost 50 years in a school environment in Sollefteå, it has been carefully restored by the museum's conservators to ensure its preservation for the future.&nbsp; "Atti Johansson was a trailblazer in social debate on many levels. As early as the 1960s and 70s, she was addressing questions about the differences between human and artificial intelligence and how these different systems and capabilities are valued in relation to economic profitability. Friends and family describe Atti as an extraordinarily well-read and intelligent woman with the whole world as her playground. In everything she did, she commented on and examined contemporary society thoroughly and with great integrity. She studied new computer technology in detail, interviewed engineers at IBM in Stockholm and Copenhagen, and learned to interpret technical drawings and punch cards. During winter 2022, Aikio was invited to work with historical objects from the museum's collections and commissioned to create a brand new multi-channel video work specifically for this occasion. The title means tin in Northern Sámi and focuses on textiles with tin wire embroidery, a craft unique to the Sámi. In addition, the exhibition includes a new two-channel version of the video work Dohkkáhehkke (doll’s cage) with sound by artist Katarina Barruk. The exhibition was shown at Västernorrlands museum in spring 2023 and has since travelled to Rørosmuseet in Norway where it has been exhibited as part of the official program for the south Sámi culture festival Raasten Rastah. The project brings together works by seven artists who investigate the relationship between place and displacement.We have always travelled the world by putting one foot in front of the other. This seemingly simple activity can be of physical as well as mental nature with the ambition to reach other places or spiritual dimensions. By walking together, we take part in an activity that stretch both backwards and forwards – between generations and species. Wander Wonder invites the audience to experience performance, sound works and installations that interact with Varvsberget's historical, social and geographical context.&nbsp; Participating artists: Mattias Andersson, Dimen Hama Abdulla, Oscar Kaleva, Jenny Lundgren, Malin Lin Nordström, Lena Stenberg, Ylva Westerlund.Co-curated by Karolina Aastrup and Helena Byström, 2023. Six artists show works that deal with issues of artificial intelligence (AI), conspiracy theories, nuclear power, biodiversity, deforestation, our heating climate and indigenous rights. Together, the artworks provide a snapshot of the transformative questions that define life here and now. In parallell to the physical exhibition, a digital version was created in collaboration with CUBE and Art/Sensation. The exhibition is a three chapter narrative of the importance of glaciers told in a scientific, illustrative and poetic way. ”Meltdown” shows scale from the planetary level to microscopic biological impact, humanitarian suffering, adaptation and more. Together the artistic interpretations in Meltdown give visitors unique insights into the world’s cryosphere, its fragile ecosystem and our changing global climate. The selection of artworks was made from the archive of climate change charity Project Pressure. The archive was created between 2008-2018 through commissioned works. Leila Khoury Nimry was thirteen years old when she fled her home in Haifa, Palestine during the Nakba in 1948. In PRE-EXODUS she shares the memories of her childhood bedroom, illustrated and developed into a virtual reality experience, created by her granddaughter, Jordanian artist Solenne Tadros (b. 1996). The work activates questions of memory, intergenerational trauma, forced displacement and the notion of home.The exhibition opened with an artist talk between Solenne Tadros, Professor of Social Anthropology Shahram Koshravi and Karolina Aastrup which introduced the work and opened up for a conversation on its related themes. The talk was recorded and published as a podcast by Accelerator, listen to it here. The exhibition and public program was part of Karolina Aastrup’s graduation project at the international MA programme Curating Art at Stockholm University. The olive tree symbolizes the resilience of the Palestinian people in their ongoing resistance to live under Israeli military oppression. In line with the omnipresent military surveillance effort in the area, Artist + Allies x Hebron has created a counter offense by placing surveillance cameras in Palestinian owned olive groves coinciding with the commencement of the annual olive harvest.&nbsp;Artists + Allies x Hebron, AAH, is an NGO founded by human rights activist Issa Amro and artist Adam Broomberg producing a series of artistic projects focusing on the olive tree as a symbol of Palestinian culture.
